Lyrics

[Intro]

[Verse 1]
One twenty in the morning, the mall's been dark a year
Our cars are nosed out at the on-ramp and we're still here
I left my door hung open so the radio fills the lot
You're up on my hood in the sodium light, not saying goodbye

[Pre-Chorus]
The four fifty runs east and I'm going to be on it
So don't start a goodbye, because I won't take it

[Chorus]
I'm not leaving you, I'm leaving first
Someone has to go and see if the world is worth it
Same lot, same light, last Friday of August
I'm not leaving you, I'm leaving first

[Verse 2]
Ninety thousand on the odometer and all of it this town
One bag in the back seat and the gas gauge already down
I wrote it on a receipt from the station and closed your hand
Blue ink, so you know exactly where I'll be

[Pre-Chorus]
The headlights burn two holes straight through the dark
You don't have to wait for me, you just have to show up

[Chorus]
I'm not leaving you, I'm leaving first
Someone has to go and see if the world is worth it
Same lot, same light, last Friday of August
I'm not leaving you, I'm leaving first

[Bridge]
If the world turns out smaller than this parking lot
I'll take the first exit back and spend whatever's in the tank
You'll hear my engine before you ever see the lights

[Final Chorus]
I'm not leaving you, I'm leaving first
Someone has to go and see if the world is worth it
Last Friday of August, one twenty, same white line
I'm not leaving you, I'm leaving first
(I'm leaving first)

[Outro]
Same lot, same light — don't be late
