Lyrics

[Intro]
The porch light's on at a house I stopped calling
I knocked at midnight and you came out laughing

[Verse 1]
They cut the karaoke off at a quarter past one
You held the mic, I took the blame, and we ran
There's a shopping cart still spinning in the lot
And a traffic cone in the back seat where my jacket was

[Pre-Chorus]
Now it's four in the morning under fluorescent hum
My hands are stuck to the table and the words won't come
So I'm ordering for everybody, here they come

[Chorus]
I can't say it right, so the check is mine
Pancakes for the years I let go by
Hash browns nobody ordered, coffee, pie
I can't say it right, so the check is mine

[Verse 2]
I practiced the whole sentence doing eighty on the interstate
Had it perfect by the exit, then I got it wrong
There's syrup on the laminate, a receipt in my hand
And I keep folding it in quarters while you wait

[Pre-Chorus 2]
You said you weren't angry, you just wondered where I went
I said I went under and I couldn't lift the phone
Then the plates hit the table and I lost the thread again

[Chorus 2]
I can't say it right, so the check is mine
Pancakes for the years I let go by
Hash browns nobody ordered, coffee, pie
I can't say it right, so the check is mine

[Guitar Solo]

[Bridge]
I'm sorry I disappeared
That's the line I drove all night to say
It came out crooked and too quiet
But you heard it anyway

[Chant Break]
Hey! Hey! The check is mine!
Hey! Hey! The check is mine!

[Final Chorus]
I can't say it right, so the check is mine
Pancakes for the years I let go by
Hash browns nobody ordered, coffee, pie
I can't say it right, so the check is mine
(so the check is mine)

[Outro]
The sun's coming up on a cone in the back seat
And nobody's leaving yet
